Baptist Medical Center Beaches Celebrates Opening of New High-Tech Surgery Center

Jacksonville, Florida, January 6, 2011 -- Baptist Medical Center Beaches will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Baptist Beaches Surgery Center on Thursday, January 6, at 4 pm. The outpatient surgery center is housed within Baptist Beaches' new three-story medical office building, which will also include specialty physician offices such as Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute.

The 15,238 square-foot Baptist Beaches Surgery Center is located on the first floor of the new building and has the latest in high-tech, smart operating room (OR) suites. It houses four, 541 square-foot, operating rooms; 17 patient bays for pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery recovery; and will provide pre-operative preparation and testing. Procedures will include orthopaedic, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, gynecology, podiatry and other general surgeries not requiring an overnight stay.

The ORs are equipped with Stryker technologies and feature:

Stryker booms which keep all OR equipment suspended around each surgical bed for easy access and space optimization
  • A centralized computer system that controls all of the equipment including lighting within the operating room from a central control desk, allowing staff to activate or adjust devices from 10 -15 ft. away
  • Three 26" Stryker digital high-definition flat monitors that allow surgical team to see the surgical field from anywhere in the operating room
  • 1080p high-definition video resolution allows for crisp, clear images showing intricate detail
  • A 46" wall-mounted, high-definition LCD monitor
  • LED surgical lights that stay cool without sacrificing brightness and eliminate potentially harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays. A reflector keeps the surgical field shadow-free. The technology is greener because LED light bulbs rarely need to be replaced and disposed, decreasing environmental waste.
  • A high-definition camera installed in one of the LED surgical lights to allow for remote physician teaching, along with connectivity to other networked locations, such as conference rooms, auditoriums, pathology, radiology, surgeons' offices, and other off-site locations
  • The Stryker Communication Integration system, which uses fiber optic cabling, allowing physicians in the OR to connect and consult with physicians in other surgical suites, and vice versa
  • New monitoring equipment in the pre- and post operative areas
  • Pre- and post-operative bays that include comfortable lounge chairs for patients to be prepped and recover in, as well as televisions

"The new surgery center will enhance our outpatient surgery services for both our patients and physicians by providing them with the latest advanced technologies and modern facilities," said Edward Sim, hospital president, Baptist Medical Center Beaches. "In addition, there will be a number of physician offices in the building, making it extremely convenient for our patients. The community will be well-served by this addition and we couldn't be more pleased with it."
